Hi folks. As some of you know I recently got bake to biking. I bought a Cube Hyde Pro to replace a Specialized Rockhopper that was stolen. When I bought the Rockhopper in 2011 I spec'd Shimano M520 SPD's & used them for a year or so before finally deciding I'd had enough. I replaced them with a pair of Shimano DX's and never looked back. Then the bike was stolen.

Fast forward to two weeks ago and I took delivery of my new bike. It came with shitty generic platform pedals but I wasn't concerned as I still had my original SPD's. Now that my bike is essentially a road bike the SPD's would be perfect. No! I'm sick & tired of changing shoes before I go out on the bike. And it's no fun where I live anyway, far too many tourists walking & driving wherever the hell they like!

So I need a pair of platforms. I did try the ones supplied with the Cube but they're far too small and nowhere near grippy enough.

I've had Nano-X's recommended by @Ffoeg already but they're a bit pricey and not easy to source here in France. I'm tempted to just go for a pair of Shimano Saints to be honest. They're available everywhere & they're Shimano so the quality's going to be decent. On the other hand many people seem to go for DMR V8's & V12's. The V12's again are a bit pricey but I think they're probably a better bet than the V8's.

The only deal-breaker I have is that they must be black. The blacker the better.

Help!

Wellgo V8 copys from Chain Reaction (if they will post to France). I prefer flats to clipped in and I have these on all my bikes.

Lovely big platform with metal pins, your feet will not slip on them. A little on the heavy side compared with SPDs but I'm not a weight weeny so a 300g difference is not an issue for me.
Why don't you just wear the same shoes and pedals on your road bike? I wear my MTB on both and manage to clump around in them ok.
I only have one bike. To be honest, although I do appreciate the SPD's when I'm actually pedalling they're a PITA when I'm not.

They're definitely in the running mate. I just wonder if they're better than Shimano Saints.

Which ones from these are Wellgo V8 copies?..

Wellgo LU808s, the similar Union ones (SP-808, maybe, if I'm remembering correctly) or the Pilot clones. I've a set of each. The Wellgos are very slightly better.

Vavert commuters are nice but I doubt their longevity. Ask me in a few years ;)

As for big, MKS Lambdas get good press but I'm not sure if they come in black.

What is it, exactly, that makes you think the v12s are "probably a better bet than then V8's"?

Is it just that they cost more?

I'll see if I can source Wellgo pedals over here. The Lambdas are horrible looking things imo, they'd have to be very good I deed to get a look in.

They're bigger & they're lighter as far as I know.

There's also the Race Face Chester which seems to get good reviews. I do like the idea of a nylon pedal.

Superstar will ship to France, so that shouldn't be a barrier to you.

They've just scored 10/10 in an MBR review so they really are superb pedals - http://www.mbr.co.uk/reviews/pedals-products/superstar-nano-x-flat-pedals-review

....but if they're not on the card for you, then I'd go with the Saints

I've benn humming & hawing over this for ages, as you all know. Today I decided to think laterally and tightened up my SPD's from the loosest setting. Only by two notches mind but wow, what a difference. It would seem that although the loosest setting is great for newbies whilst actually pedalling it just means that whn it comes to disengaging there's a bit more distance to travel. The extra couple of notches I've tightened up bu just means that when I do try to disengage it happens that bit quicker. Who knew?! Actually, is that the way it works? Either way, somethings has changed & I'm now much more confident in stivking with SPD's. The truth s that, at least whilst I'm ctually pedalling, nothing can touch them. I never think about my feet. It's only for maybe 2% of my ride when I need to put my foot down in a hurry that I think about my feet.

Long story short. I'm sticking with SPD's. Thank you to everyone who has contributed & even though I'm not going to change I know that, if I were to take the plunge into flat pedals, Rockstar would be right up there.

OK, I've finally ordered a pair of Shimano Saint platform pedals. I have recently been picking up some work gardening and it's only a two mile ride to the truck. I needed a pair of pedals that allow me to wear any kind of footwear and I missed the offer on the Nano's so Shimano it is. I'll update with photos & riding impressions once they're dlivered & fitted.

Today I took delivery of a pair of Shimano Saint PD-MX80 pedals. What can I say other than they are superb! For scooting about the town in normal shoes they are excellent & they grip the soles of my shoes very well. Thanks to all who offered advice.
