I'd love to get clipless but I just don't think I can afford them at the minute

Me neither. But my trainers were causing the paint to wear off the cranks and I felt generally uneasy about the cages.

I felt it was an investment, both to protect my bike, myself and to get to work more quickly.

I bought the cheapest pedals and shoes I could find (within reason). Still set me back about £70 in total.

IMO you have got to use the right shoes! Trainers are a no no. Cycling shoes - smooth stiff sole - much like today's clipless road shoes - were definitely the thing to wear, and if you were really serious you used nail on shoe plates (cleats) as well - then it really was tricky getting your foot out in emergency. Go clipless.

I use clips and straps with steel toe capped boots when commuting, trainers when running errands and with cycle shoes when doing club rides, its one of the great things I like with clips and straps, you are not restricted to just cycle shoes.
