Hi all,
I've just got some pedals with toe clips. I'm having difficultly putting my second foot in once I've started cycling. Any advice? Is my seat maybe too high? Or am I just a bit rubbish?
Thanks

Go clipless,

Seriously though the pedal will always fall the same way iirc toe down and you get into the habit of flipping them back and inserting your foot, keeps your straps loose or even remove them until you are confident. Its a long time since I went through the faff and went clipless shortly after :-)

I've recently swapped from cages to clipless (freewheel road bike). I wouldnt go back.

I wont even put those cages on my flat pedaled MTB

Are all your friends hipsters?
I understand your pain, I just can't use toe clips, I can never get that second foot in!
I use clipless on fixed, go for the mtb type as it's much easier to clip in. You will need 'special' shoes

Haha no. A few of them actually cycled London to Paris fixed.

Think Clipless is the way, although looking at the cost of the shoes it light be a while

I'm on clipless on my geared bike and clips and straps on my fixed, I prefer clips and straps, I don't get any advantage from the clipless. Getting the second foot in on clips and straps is just practice, you just need to learn how to do it same as you need to learn to use clipless.

Is clipless a good idea on a fixie though?

I have a fixed-wheel bike and have only ever ridden it clipless.

I can't even imagine riding it without clipless pedals, as I'd never keep my feet on the pedals at high cadences.

I'm not a skilled cyclist, far from it. I see the art of riding fixed-wheel without clipping in as something of a dark art for the highly skilled only.

Go clipless.

But.... it may be better to practise riding clipless on a bicycle with freewheel first. I was already using clipless pedals when I went fixed. That might have helped me. Some people have mentioned difficulty clipping in on a fixed-wheel. If you're already accustomed to clipless systems, there will be no difficulty.

For ease of use, Egg Beaters are my fave.

Thanks. I'll give it a few more goes before I move back to normal pedals. Maybe wear some smaller (not as chunky) shoes too (might help)

Definitely practice required.

I ride clips on fixed without a problem. It might be worth looking at leather straps rather than the canvas type that seems to be common now as leather is stiffer and holds it's shape, making it easier to get your feet in place.

Its worth saying that some pedals are easier to use with clips and straps than others, I'm using these at the moment

they are very easy to get into, I've come across the odd pair of pedals that are awkward even for me, and I've been using clips and straps for over twenty years.
