I remember some years ago, late afternoon out for a ride, return in evening, 3 km from home suddenly pedaling alike car gearbox in free and a walk further to home. Temperature had dropped below zero, water inside freewheel had become ice and the pawls sat like fishes frozen in ice.
Then another day, in morning on the way to work, sudden downpour, 10 sec later suddenly pedaling in free and a walk further to work. Water inside freewheel had made grease sticky and the pawls didn't spring back.
I tried some declared as better (bigger amount pawls) freewheels - expensive ones, 52 euro each, and it was just the same and they wore like cheese under sandpaper. I still have the last new spare one, as a remembrance of the expensive crap they sell these decades.
