If you've swapped the pedals around, then how hard was it to put them on the first time?

It should be hard to put the pedals on the wrong way round because you should (in theory) be fighting resistance, so if you did put them on the wrong way round the first time then you could have done some damage to the threads on the cranks.

Did the bike you took the pedals off have an old one piece crank by any chance? If so, the threads on the pedal spindle are slightly smaller. It's the only explanation I can think of for you to be able to switch the left and right pedal around. I doubt if the threads are completely stripped in the cranks.

Could they have been forced on with crossed threads onto the wrong cranks and so be at a slight angle? But I can't believe you would then be able to get them off and then put them on the "right" cranks because the threads would be knackered. It's not april the 1st is it?

I would be surprised if it's a bracket problem (but don't dismiss the possibility as wiser heads have suggested it).

Given that screwing them in was not too difficult in any instance, I am leaning towards the suggestion that there is a slight difference in the size of the two threads.

I can live with the small 'kink' and do not want to take the pedals off again (it will only potentially cause more thread damage). The bike is a nearly new one which I got for £31, so I don't want to risk undoing too much on it and creating a repair bill that cost more than the bike!

Perhaps the simplicity of the cheaper bike has been advantageous in this instance!

I appreciate all the help.

Then again, if the threads are different sizes and are perhaps cross threaded, riding it will grind the threads away, as well as damaging your knees in the longer run.

I'd have them out and checked before ensuring they are on properly.
