Pedal removal....it was all going to plan

I have Shimano SPD pedals with 8mm hex only spindle, no spanner flats.

Have a worsening creaking seems to be coming from the pedals. Decided to take them off and service them and re apply anti sieze to the spindle threads..

Non drive side came off quite easily.

Drive side is a complete pig. Tried smart taps with a hammer. No good. Soaked in WD40. Tried again, no good. Tried extending the hex key with a tube. No good.

Had a bit of a swear and packed the tools away.

Any ideas anyone? Will never get pedals without spanner flats on them again. grrrrrrrr

If you have a blow torch, put a bit of heat to it and then try.

Failing that, whack it harder.

so youre turning clockwise yes?

No counter clockwise

Way I remember it is that you tighten toward the front wheel and loosen toward the rear wheel. Clockwise / counter clockwise gets confusing dependent on which way you are facing ^_^

Use something a bit more penetrating than WD40 (plus gas, shock +unlock, ...).

I find squeezing the spanner or key against the crank is most effective. Avoids the whole chain strain. Careful not to pinch the heel of your hand when it moves, though.

With spanner flats, I put my gears in lowest, cranks at 10:00 driveside/2:00 non-driveside. Apply brakes. Fit the tool with handle facing up and rearwards and press gently with foot. Use an extension bar if needed.
Take care not to slip out of the hex hole and bodge it up.
If using hands I advise gloves and watch where your knuckles will end up if you slip.

Only time I have had trouble removing a pedal was when I was upgrading a friends bike, part of which was replacing the taper fit BB and cranks.

In the end I had to resort to a bit of heat after everything else failed. As that crank was destined for the scrap bin I felt easier about giving it a try.

Try placing something solid below the crank to take up the " spring in the metal " and try to remove the pedal with allen key. If that does not work remove crank and place in vice to remove pedal.
