Macclesfield 'Old Road' used to be rough as ar$eholes unless they resurfaced it, it was the route of the traditional 'Cat And Fiddle' but it was just a farm track last time I walked it (easy on an MTB though)
Hmmm...Am taking the CX with 28mm 4Seasons as well as the roadie. Might give it a go. I can always get off and push for a bit if need be. Am also trying to work out if I'll have time to get to Bakewell via B roads and then come back on the Monsal trail, but not sure I'll have time for that.

I'm thinking of giving this a whirl on Saturday afternoon while I wait for the others to arrive. If anyone's done this route and can advise how rough the track sections are leading off Macclesfield Old Road and then later on alongside Fernlee Reservoir I'd be grateful. Thanks.

That route is impossible with anything other than a full suss MTB. The road off Long Hill down by Fernilee is OK, I've done it on a road bike and it's just about passable. The left turn at the top of the Goyt (Macclesfield Old Road) is very rough as far as I can see. I've never ridden it and wouldn't want to try on a road bike. Maybe just about possible on your CX but not sure

The turn off the A5004 (Long Hill) back to Whaley is completely impossible. Stupidly I had a go on my road bike once to see what it was like. It was a nice walk I suppose

I've plotted a quick ride out of Whaley for you that takes in some little lanes that you're not planning on riding otherwise.

BTW, The Bike Factory in Whaley Bridge is where I take my bike. If you need any fettling, they're good

I'd have given it a go on a hardtail, I wasn't sure if they'd improved it (it's been a while since I was up there.)

That's great, thanks. I don't have a GPS device so will mark that on my OS map tonight. I'll be arriving at noon on Saturday; if the others are due within a couple of hours I'll do that route, if they're likely to be longer I'm going to head out through Buxton and come back along the Monsal Trail. Thanks for the bike shop tip.

if you want to keep an eye on the weather forecast locally, this website is very reliable

Great. I've been using Met Office and BBC online forecasts this week for Hull; the 2 have been frequently quite different and on some days neither has been right, so hope for more joy from that site!

I'd nip into Cheshire for a sneaky and leisurely 40 miles as I'd doubt you'd cover 800ft of climbing in that distance.
