+1

Exactly the same happened to a machine I built for a friend. I discovered only after trying EVERYTHING else.

Another reason might be dead or dying capacitors on the mainboard - this was common around 2002-2003 vintage hardware. They usually are arranged around the CPU. If they are bulging or leaking, then it might be the mb is on its way out.

Deid again. BSD x 10 in an hour, then again repeatedly while trying to run System Recovery CD. Finally did something I probably should have done a lot earlier, and unplugged everything that didn't need to be connected, including - crucially it now turns out - an external hard drive that I'd installed to provide backups in real time. Once that was disconnected, the recovery CD ran with no problems, and now - 48 hours later - it's still running sweet as you like. Sod backups - I'll leave it like this for the moment. Cross fingers....

Just recieved my sons laptop back after nearly three weeks, it was going blank and wouldnt turn off or on, they replaced the mother board and charging point, not sure how big that is but is the motherboard the main part of the pc?

I think in most laptops the motherboard pretty much is the pc. The rest is just for putting stuff in, getting stuff out, storage and looking/listening at/to stuff.

Thanks, fingers crossed all is well this time, we have nine months left of the warranty so not too worried.

The Motherboard is the backbone of the system. Not the only important part though...
