Always remember that you don't *have to*. If it looks dodgy, if you're not sure of the phasing of the lights, if you just fancy a rest, there's no shame in sitting in the traffic - I've seen a few folk have to make an emergency veer leftwards b/c they misjudged the phasing of a light that lets traffic into the space they're using for filtering.
If you decide to do it, on the right is usually best in the UK - you may need to modify that if you have a left turn to make before the queue of traffic ends, if you're trying to reach a cycle facility before the queue ends, &c. Pay very close attention to gaps in the traffic, busses and vans are swines for letting people turn out/across, and visibility past them isn't good enough for either you, or the driver being allowed out to see each other. (Again, a benefit of being on the right is that they'll usually be looking for traffic where you are).
