The hello topic again lol. I normally wave at on-comers if there aren't hundreds out and I'll usually get a wave back. I don't usually say anything during an overtake because it just feels awkward; I sometimes give a little wave type thing with my left hand though.
I'm not really bothered by not getting a wave back or a hello but I did think it was strange the other day when I said hello to another cyclist at some lights after she'd been drafting me for a couple of minutes and she just stared blankly at the traffic lights...

When grovelling up a hill I'm pretty much oblivious to my surroundings. Otherwise, I'll always acknowledge people. Probably a habit picked up on the job, as I often do it walking about town.

Never on the commute though. That's nearly always a time of intense irritation

Miss cisamcgu and I were grinding up a short, sharp hill a few years ago; I was out of breath and pushing her (she was only about 12 I think) and this old dear on a sit up and beg bike, complete with basket of shopping sailed passed us with a cheery "It is rather steep, isn't it ?"

Talking of passing someone, I passed someone at the weekend, nothing unusual about it, I even said Hi, he said "not too close, not too close" to me, I was a good metre away from him. He didnt look nervous or new to cycling (good bike and gear quite worn) so I thought it was strange.

Nevermind, I enjoyed my cycle anyway :-)

My acknowledgement rules are the polar opposite of yours. I will give the little "right hand slightly off the bars " acknowledgment to a cyclist coming the other way but that's about it.

If I overtake someone I always say hello and make some cryptic comment about headwinds, cafes, groupsets etc. Anyone who is lucky enough to overtake me and doesn't say anything is a miserable twat.

You do realise that the riders that you have passed with your smarty comments all start furiously making V signs at you once you've gone by, don't you? ;)

On passing another cyclist, how about just 'hi' or 'morning' and 'have nice ride'? Better than silence, is no effort but can be sincerely meant every time, avoids any catalyst for a 4 page thread on CycleChat and will reduce @ianrauk 's 'Kerching' revenue. Commuting not included in this: constant greeting would get wearing and they're not out for a 'nice' ride.

Good call Alex. But the point is it's that another random person on a bike not returning a greeting or a hello is the problem with some posters. Some people seem to get really upset for some reason. Stew about it whilst riding a bike. Get back home then sit down at the computer to compose yet another thread about it. Oh yes, it's usually a lycra'd up roadie that is the cause of the ire.

If I say hello and I don't get a reply back.. it means nothing. Certainly nothing to get upset about.

I saw someone in the newsagent this morning I though I knew but hadn't seen for ages
Said a cheery "good morning" at the checkout and got a slightly hesitant "eh good morning" and a nice smile back.
Think we both realised at the same time (who on earth are you)
Just thankful I didn't go with plan A, which was to jump out from behind the shelves and go "waaaahhh" :hyper:
