As I've mentioned on here before I no longer give a wave, say 'morning' on indeed anything else, especially on my commutes, after one rider told me to F off.

Do you wave or say hello to every stranger you pass in the street?

Don't worry
Had a lovely local ride yesterday but never ever encountered such a miserable bunch
Passed 2 roadies, Mr old and chubby on a Carrera, evil death stare from him
Then Mr Kuota, who didn't even look at me, (nice bike, shame about the rider )
Only one lady walking her dog acknowledged me (she was on her phone but paused the call to smile and say hello)
Maybe it was "grumpy day" yesterday and I didn't know?
:bicycle:
it was aberdeen though was it not...grumpy gits up there... i can say that cause my family are from up there, still have quite a few living up there too

most cyclists are friendly more so than car drivers just enjoy your time cycling and dont get concerned if someone is n

why let someone like that change or influence you ? i would want to be the complete opposite of him mater of fact i would even go out of my way to say morning every time to the guy that said F off just to wind him up .

I think it's a great thing that there's a lot more cyclists on the roads than 10-15 years ago. Do you need to say hello to every single one that passes.......

It didn't really change anything at all as I rarely give folk I pass a second look anyway and it allowed me to go back to my much more comfortable state of ignoring strangers. I only got into the bad habit of acknowledging people via peer pressure anyway lol.

I only said 'morning' to the ignoramous is question as the passing speed was quite leisurely. Given the venom in his 'F off' I though it wise not to speak further to him for fear he might give himself a heart attack.

To be fair, this thread is a special take on the vexed hello question. It's specifically about saying "hello" as you pass someone, not as you approach them.
There are various possibilities here.
"On your right" A traditional polite notification
"On your right!" A command. This means - "Get out of my way move to the crappy road surface on the left while I pass"
"hello" or "hi" which could mean anything from "hello/hi" to "eat my dust sucker, catch me if you can"
If the overtake happens on a hill, there's the jokey comment which may be intended to encourage the struggling rider being overtaken, but probably comes out as patronising and insulting.

Overtaking people isn't something that I need to do terribly often, but when I do, I just give plenty of room and overtake stealthily with only the rattling of my mudguards disturbing the air.
