Trikes usually have drive to nearside wheel only, diffs are rare.

Although did you know that differentials were originally invented for pedal tricycles.

Pashley's are only single wheel drive wiith the other side running free on a large plastic bush. However, these are often a very tight fit and if you lift the trike up and turn the pedals both wheels will turn. It's only when you make a tight turn that the free side spins on the bush.

The 'main' chain on my old Pashley Picador Trike (1980something?) stops short of the rear axle, then it joins onto another cog thingy on a small box thingy, then there's a short loop of chain from the box to the rear axle.

Is that box thingy the differential?

thanks to all who replied, the pashley seems fine now we have ridden it around a bit. the offside wheel bush must have been a tight fit as hilldodger suggested.
