I hope the local residents are as considerate as you but not may are?

I can remeber my next door neighbour, he would go mad if someone parked their even with me. However, he frequently parked outside my house but space was a bit tight their. Where I am parking now, their is plenty of space.

See what happens, I will keep you posted !!
.. some will be considerate, some won't be. But the point is that even the grumpiest old git will think twice before going mental at someone who's been saying a cheery "good morning" for the last couple of weeks!!

I admit that I've got rose tinted glasses on in this respect 'cos I live in a little cul-de-sac with 12 houses and have some of the best neighbours you could wish for: we do parties together and all sorts. My cousin calls it "Ramsey Street".

But I find on the commute that there's few I encounter on a bridleway or whatever that won't acknowledge a "good morning", no matter how surly they look.

Are there any roughly shaggable wimmin' on the street? If so, that could be your free parking ticket!

What a considerate man you are chipmonster.

I have to agree with swea'pea. If there is plenty of parking in the street you should be fine. I would leave the wine at home as well, if you start parking outside someone else's house in the street they might want wine as well!

I would park in a supermarket as a last resort, apart from possible clamping there will inevitably be some trolley bashing done to your car at some point. Also if some chavvy types spot you leaving your car there every day they may be inclined to start removing parts from it and in a supermarket car park, no one will care. But in a residential street, they might.

I did this occasionally when I started cycling, and simply varied my parking place most days.

I understand your concern, but presumably for just one day or so every few weeks, it would be hard for people to get annoyed?

Cheers

If there's plenty of room I can't see it's a problem. Why don't you just vary where you park in the street each day so you're not outside the same person's house all the time. I agree with the others that a simple smile and hello could work wonders and might mean the residents keep an eye on your car.

If it doesn't work out, you could park it in Heaton Park, entrance opp Sainsburys. Its free during the week.

Plenty of nice quiet runs thro Blackley into the city.

Set yourself a target of when you will be able to ride the 30 miles to work.

Believe me it won't be long.

I wouldn't mention anything to the residences - Next thing you know it's the Topic of Conversation and it only takes a whisper to the wrong person to know your car is gonna be parked in spot x between whenever and whenever and it's petty theft time.

30 miles is a lot, I have managed 8 okay but 30 miles each way will kill me.

Anyway, started with 4 miles each way, Monday was a killer (i thought my heart was gonna pop out, it was beating that fast!!), Tuesday was okay, and today was a breeze.

I gonna step up the mileage steadily.

Not down here in Southampton your not. You need to pay for a permit from the council and even then it does'nt gaurantee you a parking space outside your own house:sad:
Try living in Wesminster, we regularly have to park a ten minute walk away from our front door....

I have 3 choices:

1) Continue to park where I am and see what happens. Maybe talk to the local residence but not comfortable knocking on their door. Offer a bottle of wine etc

2) Park at Asda Harpurhey (which would be a 2 mile ride). Initially okay but maybe too short later.

3) Park at Sainsbury Heaton (5.8 miles). Distant seems okay etc.

I am probally going to park where I am and wait for any consequences and take it from their. If someone complains, I will start using the supermarket car parks or start knocking on a few doors.

The lady who was twitching her curtain looked a bit upset so I might park next door.

You sound very aware of other peoples feelings on the matter,my hat off to you sir:smile:Wrightly or wrongly people get very attatched to the front of their house, even if it is a public area, and dont take lightly to others using it to park a car,but lots of good advice here,as well as your own ideas. My own way would be to not park in the same place regularly, even if there is plenty of space,it would save the "why my front all the time"Or even as you have mentioned, the supermarket.Even if it was a bit close you could always go the long way round to and from work, and on those days when your in a hurry or just cant be bothered its a quick one to the car and home:smile:
