Yes, I know it;s a bit early, but Audax Club Parisien, the organiser, is changing the criteria for entry. The usual SR series in 2011 will still be required, but priority will be given to people who complete a BRM event next year. The longer the event, the earlier you will be able to apply to ride.

Last time, in 2007, over 5000 rode and the organisation was stretched to its limits. So next time they have various mechanisms to regulate the numbers. There will also be quotas for each country, though it seems likely that the UK won't be affected by this.

So who's thinking of riding?

I'm thinking of it though, to be honest, after LEL I pretty much decided that it's not really my thing.

I have a club mate that's put together a qualifying 400 so I'm going to ride that with him (next June) and get my pre-application in. Then I'll decide whether I want to ride or not. Said club mate also wants me to train with him, and do the SR rides (200,300,400 & 600) in 2011.

I'm the only other long-distance rider in our club so I'm feeling sort of obliged to ride with him, even though I actually genuinely don't mind. So I'll do the qualification rides, it's just PBP I'm not sure about.

It's a very different ride. Thousands of cyclists. Motorcycle escort out of the suburbs at the start. People lining the streets and cheering at every village. At each control it's like the whole town is involved. Throughout the event you'll hardly ever be out of sight of other riders.

That's horrible. Good luck with the recovery. See you in 2015 I hope.

As I understand it from ACP's documents, for the individual rider it's the distance of one event that counts. So a 600k allows earlier entry than a 400, and so on.

For a long time the UK has run its own validation system and most UK events outside PBP years are AUK-validated. Next year this will change, with most events being BRM, validated in Paris. So check the event you're entering is marked as BRM.

Also from the RUSA site

For randonneurs, pre-registration via the Internet will allow people who made BRM in 2010 to reserve their participation for Paris-Brest-Paris. Longer is the homologated BRM distance and earlier they wil be able to pre-register. For example:

* With a BRM 400 km in 2010, they may register from 15 April 2011.
* With a BRM 300 km in 2010, they may register from 01 May 2011.
* With a BRM 200 km in 2010, they may register from 15 May 2011.
* by not realizing a BRM in 2010, they could not register until June 01, 2011.

These dates are still to be defined and will be communicated early 2011.

The series of 4 BRM (200, 300, 400 and 600) homologated in 2011 is still required to register for PBP 2011.

Yup. That's a straight quote from ACP. Note that they're now saying a 600 will count above a 400. But doubtless it'll change according to what they can administer. Remember ACP is a small club - 60 or so members. Paris-Brest-Paris stretches their capabilities.

Here's explanation/clarification from RUSA on 2011 requirements.

Bonne route!

All things are possible.
Have a read of Joe Simpson's books (if you've not already done so) Astounding what powers of recovery the human body has - despite what medical science may say.

Indeed. In March of 2007, I underwent extensive oral surgery to remove a tumour (my second bout of cancer), less than a month before my first PBP qualifier. I rode the 200, only 15 minutes slower than my fastest time on that route, completed the series (bettering all previous times) and qualified for PBP.

I intend to apply the same frame of mind to 2010. Hopefully the body will follow.

Thanks for the encouragement.

From www.lesrandonneursmondiaux.org:

Qualification PBP 2011

Already communicated by Jean-Gualbert Faburel :
In 2011, the next Paris-Brest-Paris will be held. Because the number of participants reached the acceptable limits in 2007, the Audax Club Parisien considers changing the demands for qualification. A limitation will be kept, based on the following priciples
There will be two levels of limitation:
- Collective: Aa quota of participants per country. Places for newcoming coutries will be there without disadvantaging the former countries, while taking into account the progress of each country.
- Individual: People who participate in events in the years between PBP will be encouraged while avoiding the imposition of selection criteria far more stringent than in previous editions.
The quota per country will be calculated with the number of entrants in PBP 2007, the limit in PBP 2011 and taking into account the evolution of homologations in a country between 2006 and 2010.
This method is easy to communicate and immediately provides figures in January 2011. It promotes strong countries but leaves places for new entrants because the calculation of the quota is made only for countries which registered more than 50 people in 2007.
The calculation formula is as follows:

The individual part: Earlier registration via the Internet for PBP 2011 will be the advantage for randonneurs who participated in BRM in 2010. The longer the homologated BRM distance the earlier registration is possible. For example:
• With a BRM 400 km in 2010, one may register from 15 April 2011.
• With a BRM 300 km in 2010, one may register from 01 May 2011.
• With a BRM 200 km in 2010, one may register from 15 May 2011.
• without realizing a BRM in 2010, one could not register until June 01, 2011.
These dates are still to be defined and will be communicated early 2011.

The series of 4 BRM (200, 300, 400 and 600) homologated in 2011 is still required to register for PBP 2011.
Conclusion: If your country can produce more homologation kilometres in 2010, it will have two benefits: the country quota will increase, and the riders who did rides in 2010 will have priority in the registration process in 2011

Pre-registration will be conducted on an individual basis. Entries may be centralized as some of you have done in 2007.
