Paramo jackets

I am considering getting a waterproof one with a hood, generally to use when walking around as my current one is not as waterproof as I would like.
However, what I dont know is if the water soaks into the fabric or beads off?

I much prefer stuff where the water beads off as I hate that heavy, wet, clammy feeling even though I maybe dry underneath.

So what are the paramo ones like?

thanks

Very good. I wear them off the bike a great deal and have toured in Paramo jackets/smocks in ghastly weather. I now find them too hot and heavy on the bike, apart from in the depths of the (Highland) winter. If you wash and reproof them regularly the water beads off fine and they're great general jackets, particularly as you can wear a bit less underneath.

We both have Paramo kit and it is excellent - I rate it far better than Goretex stuff. Very durable and very repairable. Go for the lighter weight jackets - I think they do one for bike/running use

Love mine. Never had a wet clammy feeling - the rain keeps out.

They are very warm so yeah no use for cycling but great for walking.

Love my Paramo jacket, too warm for cycling but a great all rounder for wet weather walks.

Will have to look at the lighter ones.

I've got a Paramo jacket, a lighter weight one. It's fab. If it wore out (currently had it for almost 10 years and it's fine), I would get another one pdq.

I've got 3 Velez Light smocks and a windproof, they are really good generally and will keep you warm, comfortable and dryish. If your in very heavy rain and wearing a rucksack I've found you get wet round the armpits from the rain going through not sweat. You also have to wash them in Tec wash and reproof them every so often as well, otherwise they lose their water repellancy.
They are expensive new so try to get one on Ebay if you dont want to pay £250+. You also have to be careful with them as the fabric rips easily its not like a Gore tex jacket. So dont be catching it on nails or brambles etc. They are a lot more breathable and comfortable than any other walking jacket I've worn though.
To answer your question its a bit of both, it does bead off when you have just reproofed it or its new. After that it will wet out a bit but you will stay dry because the inner acts like a pump and forces the water back through.

I'd say they're a little more prone to getting wet than a traditional waterproof. On the other hand, if you've got to that point, then a traditional waterproof is likely to be wet on the inside, which is far less pleasant!
Unfortunately, I can't often wear them, as I run really hot if I'm exerting any energy at all. It doesn't help that most of my walking is in the mountains, I guess. For me, if it's cold enough to be comfortable in a Paramo, then it's too cold to be raining

I have some Paramo trousers which I think are great and a jacket, less so. The problem is that the waterproofing needs to be washed in too frequently as wearing a rucsack abrades the shoulders and the jacket then lets the water through. I also have Gore which I rate as the best and a Jack Wolfskin which I prefer to the Paramo.

I have a Velez light smock and cyclingwise it’s brilliant if a tad bulky. Yes you need to tecwash it every so often but that’s no big deal.
Why I rave about it so much is that it keeps me drier than any other jacket (inc Gore-Tex and variants), it breathes and ventilates well )am a hot and sweaty bugger) it keeps you warm if you have to stop for example for a mechanical and is perfect for nipping into town, walking the dog or bog- trotting across the moors. It works well in a wide range of temperatures as well.
Can be had for less than £200. A lot of money, but well worth it in the foulest of weather.

Personally, this doesn't bother me too much. Yes, the fabric is soft so it does catch more readily. However, it doesn't seem to affect the waterproofing and the softness does make the jacket very pleasant to wear.
