I must confess to often doing something similar. There is a level crossing near me where after crossing I just ride into and through the exit swing gate at just the right speed to avoid stopping.

Why not just tell him to stop if having a word with the shop has had no effect. somewhere it’s said he’s 16 or 17, not a child so should be able to understand what is being asked of him surely.
I don’t personally think it’s anything to do with the shop, especially given his age!

On a more practical note, the metal gates in our local park have had half tennis balls attached to dampen any impact and eliminate noise if opened forcefully. They're very effective.

I used to do much the same with gates because it worked , if you just make it so they dont open if knocked by putting better latch on them then its problem solved without issue , locking gates is just going to annoy you more in the end especially if the only way in

No, not afraid but by the time he's done it and I've heard it bang and clank, hes off.
I've not got time in the morning to be waiting about for the exact minute he arrives either. I'm just locking it from now on. I'm not buying a new latch for it or anything like that. Its getting left alone.
Doing this at a level crossing is a bit different from at a private house.

You contradict yourself wanting the parents to pay for any damage, then blaming the shop and wanting the shop to deal with the person.

As I've said previously good luck to you in trying to make the parents pay. There is no disclosed legal basis that the parents are liable for any damage.

If person riding their bike into your gates is going to damage them, then one must question the state of the gates. Properly installed gates would not be destroyed by a child riding into them on his bike. Yet here you are demanding the parents pay for you to have new gates installed.
Then you manage to somehow demand a completely different legal entity do something about it.

We can all get you are not happy about the situation ( and I don't blame you), however the rants and threats of action are simply nonsense and have no legal basis.

Any reasonable person would simply lock the gate so there isn't a way for the child to enter via your property. However, it seems you prefer to demand that other pay you

I said if he broke them off the hinges I would get his parents to pay. They are properly installed but they are old and that's not what they are for, being crashed into with force every single day and bouncing off the brick gate posts. I haven't blamed the shop at all, you are misunderstanding totally. I have asked the shop to talk to him as they are employing him and are more accessible than he is.
He wont be doing it again as they will remain locked full stop. He'll have to start going through next doors gates to deliver the paper. If he starts ramming those the lady wont stand for it either.

You have already said that you have locked the gate so it shouldn't be a problem anymore. And sorry to say you have also admitted that the gates are on the old side so they could just say it was your fault for not maintaining them if the gates did give way and they could end up suing you.

Personally I would cut my losses. Keep the gate shut and he can't do it again. Sorted.

No contradiction at all. He is asking the shop to speak to him as they employ him. and he knows where the shop is so can talk to them. But he is saying that IF the gates are damaged, then he would be claiming from the boy's parents (though I think the boy is old enough to bear his own responsibility).

He has already said that he will be locking the gate from now on. So where you get that from, I have no idea.
