I have a couple of these:

On offer at the time for £13, reasonably well made although probably only shower proof.

It won't go along the length either - I have tried that (was trying to work out how to transport a pilates mat on a bike....)
Using normal panniers will keep the centre of gravity lower than putting something on top of the rack.
If you are not likely to ever want to consider touring then the messenger bags may be OK, but I came from a touring background and there the roller back classics really are the best you can get. You can also purchase them in singles as well and last time I checked, if you did not mind the colour you could pick up one for £45 I think it was...[/quote]

I thought I might be able to get the small rack pack lengthways (i.e. front to rear) on the rack ? The overhang might only be about 10cm, do think would work ? What happened when you tried it ?

How would you attach it to the rack? the existing clips are designed to clip into the rear panniers for attachment and whilst they attach to each other quite readily, they allow too much movement if you can get them to attach to the rack - so the rackpack could swing over the side of the rack whilst going around a corner. you would need to add bungee cords around it and also because there is no solid structure to the pack, it can fold or roll completely flat, you can not stop it sagging badly either. Even the smallest rackpack (I have the 2nd smallest) would not work safely.

As I said, I did try it, it was not going to work even with something rigid inside the bag. It was never going to be safe and length ways, even pulled all the way to my seat post (and interferring with my leg movement) there was still too much hanging over the end for me to be able to cycle safely. It completely obscured my rear light and needed several bungee cords to secure it. not safe was the outcome

Good advice, I thought bungees would do the trick. Looks like you have saved me a lot of grief & expense, much appreciated.

Looks like I will go with one Ortlieb back roller to start with.

Cheers.
