It could be nothing worse than a bit of genetic pain. My Dad and I and now my son aged 18 all had a sharp but mild pain in our right hips through our teenage years. I don't get it now aged 60.
About a year ago I had an accident at work ( I fell backwards) and I attempted to turn mid fall to land face down. Unfortunately I broke my wrist and landed on my hip at the same time. I very occasionally get the odd twinge of pain now and again but nothing major. What I found that helps is to do some squat exercises with weights. It's really strengthened my quads and made all the difference when cycling.
