Pain in back/chest

My GP believe it's just muscular and has prescribed two weeks of no cycling, an antacid, some painkillers and a gel.

I am not stopping cycling as it's my only real exercise and it's not a solution, and the pain got no better when I stopped cycling during my cold. I will keep an eye on it and go back if it persists.
So you post on here because you are curious, go to doctor because you are worried, then when he says take two weeks off you are going to ignore it?

Indeed

Why not try swimming or similar for activity while taking the GP's advice

It may be that the cold you had contributed to chest pain rather than providing relief due to not cycling ;)

I don't trust the GP. One must bear in mind this is the same surgery(admittedly a different Dr) that on two occasions diagnosed my Epilepsy as headaches and prescribed Ibuprofen!

I am worried that two weeks off, after having practically two weeks off anyway (because of my cold and other things to do), will reduce my fitness and take away my motivation. If my bike is causing muscular pain I guess I will just have to sort that out.

You won't lose that much fitness in two weeks but you may do more serious damage if you carry on.Just do short distances and don't do anything if it hurts

If it continues, pay to see a private sport physio and get a proper assessment and rehab exercises

As you pointed out, you knew you should go to the Dr, and went and then you ignore the advice on the basis of an experience of another Dr..I guess it's your health however!

The fact she prescribed an antacid AND said it's muscular is the biggest reason to put me off. Secondly she recommended I have two weeks off before I told her I already had two weeks off, bar the odd 10-20 miles. She also said it's a delayed muscle reaction - delayed from May when I bought the new bike - I've never heard of that long a delay. Regarding the cold, it's quite a different pain to a normal chest cold or chest infection.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate what you're all saying and your input. I was very tired when I posted yesterday and I will consider doing partly as the Dr says and perhaps reduce cycling and run for the next two weeks, I have been meaning to get into that!

The pain has changed a bit anyway, it tends to be mainly during the morning after I have been laid on it all night.

Did you ask her? It's entirely possible the chest and back pain have different causes

Just do a few miles and see how it goes. Make sure you do stretches etc

How was she to know if you'd had two weeks off if you hadn't told her at that point?!

You were concerned enough to ask for help and to see the Dr

That said, I've got a dodgy leg and have just been to the gym and am waiting to see the specialist...to be fair I have seen a physio who referred me (and didn't tell me to rest completely  )

I will postpone my potential 100 miler however until I have a diagnosis!!

Once she recommended taking two weeks off, I divulged that I already had in effect. She then said take another two.

She didn't say she prescribed two things for two different reasons/causes, but I guess that's possible.

Presumably because the two hadn't had any effect? That's the thing with rest, sometimes you need more

Personally I don't bother with GPs now for anything to do with my knees (unless Bupa demand a referral) but the most recent physio trip has cost me a lot (as my insurers wouldn't cover this one)
