I just wish they hadn’t promoted it as ultra endurance and talked up chaffing and saddle sores. It’s more “good“ endurance and the latter won’t exactly be encouraging people to get out on a bike.

Good effort doing it on a bike ill suited to the task. It did look a bit small under him 😂

To be honest McGuinness is a talentless prat and associating him with cycling won't get anyone to suddenly desire a bicycle.

That's not to denigrate the charitable achievement - respect for taking his own time to do something positive for good causes.

Even with a strong rider, the 'wrong' bike can make something like this really hard. Back in 2011, a then regular Fridays rider (@iLB) did one of our London-Brighton rides on a BMX, for charity. He wasn't quite himself for some time after, so I heard…

It was modified a bit. The saddle was a lot higher than a standard one. No adult could ride that far on a standard saddle.

I did say that . I was surprised they did not do a bit more such as decent hubs in the wheels which would make life much easier.

The hubs etc are fine so long as they had been serviced. They weren't sealed, which for a kids bike was fine at the time. The seat had to be changed as you'd be mad to use the original as an adult's sit bones would have no-where to sit.

He needs to eat his blimmin tea. He would have been very well looked after. It's not like he had to find his own food, ride to the evening's layover, cook tea, put up tent. Did he get his tea from a posh pub ? Fine.

I agree with your thoughts on the saddle. But just looked up Mick Fairhurst’s JOGLE on a chopper, aka Mick_F on CTC forum, pictures show he used the original saddle raised high. He did change the gearing. Makes you realise what a feat that was.

Having now watched the documentary, chapeau. I very much doubt he did enough preparation, the physical toll it clearly took on him was all too evident, and the bike certainly didn't help. Any regular road bike or hybrid would have made his life much easier. It was probably the equivalent of doing 600 miles in the same timeframe for many of us. But he got through it and raised an awful lot of money.

Did you see him ride with Cancellara on his European tour thing. Slightly nicer bike than his chopper.
