Your arse will need a lot longer than 8 miles to get used to any bike seat. You could find a specialized store and sit on one of their arse meters, it measures what width seat you need, you can then compare the result to the width of your current seat (and charge spoon)

 Quality post!!!

I've got on very well with Funkier 7 panel basic shorts - they're about £18 from CRC. The first pair were spot on, so got a second pair. I got them as I didn't want to spend loads of cash when I didn't know what to look for or how they/I would fit. Keep an eye on Lidl's weekly sale items as they sometimes do cycle gear (leg+arm warmers, cycling tops, windproof jackets, etc)

Ladies - any recommendations on padded shorts/tights/similar? My saddle is just...eurgh. Not comfy for anything more than a nip to the shops.

DHB is good kit - and cheap as kit goes. Some bib shorts are over £200!

I use their shorts and while the stitching can come out, they are comfy and Wiggle are good on returns. I had 2 pairs replaced, no questions asked.

This. DHB stuff is great and is pretty reasonably priced. My jersey and bib tights are still looking brand new after 6 months of being used and washed at least 2 or 3 times a week. They're warm too, some people on here go out in about 7 layers whereas just the 1 does me fine.

I like the Pearl IzumiSugar knicker 3/4 if you can find them in your size

Just bought some Gore shorts too on special as I like their tights

Again, I think DHB ladies kit is good too, not tried myself, don't think they go big enough for me

Maybe change the saddle too?
