Hi guys

just got myself a rockrider 5.2 after not riding a bike for a long long time even then it was a bmx

anyway managed 2 rides in first 2 days just shy of 4 miles each but each time after a mile or so, found sitting almost impossible as it was so uncomfy, just bought myself a charge spoon seat for £20 not tried yet as I was to sore in the legs and ass today, anyway seen a lot of people mention padded shorts/pants/trousers and was wondering what I should be looking at ? cheap as possible as been wipped out by bike for the month, got some cheap £7 ones from decathlon (b'twin) but they feel awkward and can't see them being much good, maybe as a back up they will be ok, seen dhb mentioned but they look expensive and there is loads of different ones.

I really can't fault this gear - it's excellent quality for the cash and the service is great. My had 3 pairs of them now, and the last one came with a freebie as a thank you for my custom

Two rides of less than four miles after an absence of some years isn't really giving it time for you to get used to a bike seat again. Personally, I'd hold off spending money unnecessarily and give it a couple of weeks for your sitting parts to get used to a bike.

DHB is good kit - and cheap as kit goes. Some bib shorts are over £200!

I use their shorts and while the stitching can come out, they are comfy and Wiggle are good on returns. I had 2 pairs replaced, no questions asked.

If you want cheap, go to Sportsdirect, they have padded shorts and tights, they ain't brilliant but will see you okay for a while. Padded does feel uncomfortable at first, you will get used to it.

Your arse will need a lot longer than 8 miles to get used to any bike seat. You could find a specialized store and sit on one of their arse meters, it measures what width seat you need, you can then compare the result to the width of your current seat (and charge spoon)

If buying DHB shorts, try and get ones which are a bit snug at first. The ones I have are now a bit big, and as a result arent the tightest fit, meaning they sometimes get caught on saddle when standing/sitting again

I got some padded cycling tights from Decathlon at Christmas time they seem OK. I've done quite a bit of cycling this year in them, and I wash them at least once a week. I did find the padding bit a bit weird to begin with, feels a bit like wearing a nappy lol. I wore shorts over the top for the first week, but now I've stopped being bothered.
I have the same bike as you, greeny, and I had issues with the seat to begin with, but I'm starting to get used to it now. I've done 37 miles on it since Monday, 17 of which I did today

Nothing over the top and nothing underneath needed with padded shorts or tights

I have to say I have recently bought some padded shorts and the padding is a bit too firm and gives far too much support to my erm 'conkers'? and cause a certain amount of ache that is none too pleasant.

I started with an ill fitting saddle with cheap padded shorts/pants and cream..
In the end I got a good quality sadlle which fitted properly and some good bib shorts and now I use no cream...
Sorted..

I seem to remember all my old bike had brooks saddles on them when I was riding in the 50's, 60's and 80's but since starting to ride again over the last 3 years I won't buy a brooks as I think just a little to expensive for my pocket. But on the subject of padded shorts or bib's be they long or the short type I would go for dhb, ok not as cheap as some but the old adage applies you get what you pay for.
I note also you have only just started it is as other members have said you have to get used to the saddle. But I agree some saddles are really not as comfy as others I've two different types on each of my bikes .
Any way I hope you get it sorted out ands have many happy hours on your bike!
