When I was learning to drive, a friend gave me one piece of advice that is useful in all areas of life. "Remember everyone else on the road is an idiot and everyone else on the road thinks you're an idiot".
If we expect everyone to be about to do something stupid then we'll be ready for the driver/cyclist/pedestrian (insert whatever you want) who does something stupid.
To put the same point more positively, you should always expect the unexpected while either driving, cycling or walking on or around roads. The highway code says as much doesn't it?
