... so require a pair of decent overtrousers purely to keep me dry. Not too bothered about cost, looks or overheating, just pure efficiency.

Any suggestions/recommendations?

Im not too clued up about cycling specific gear, but I have some ex royal navy goretex overtrousers from an army surplus shop for a tenner.

Nice waterproof, breathable and, in the case of the ones i bought, had nice velcro around the ankles, meaning i could tuck the flappy bottoms in nice and tight to avoid it catching in the chain!

Not perfect by anyones margin but for the price, if i really dont want to get wet then they do the trick (commuting to work/shops, touring etc)!

I have to be honest though, if im going out for only an hour or two for a bit of exercise, i just usually get wet, it doesnt matter to me, i can dry off when i get home.

I've never gotten wet through my overtrousers (I'm a lady so no help giving you the exact type even if I could find it - I can't quite recall if mine are Endura or Altura - I specifically went for an elasticated waist type one to allow me to get it over whatever I was wearing); but Mr SHK has also never, to my knowledge, gotten wet through his Altura Nightvision overtrousers. I've seen lots of other cyclists about in them. I also like the reflective bits behind the knees on his which mine don't have.

I think his has been updated since we bought them to this one (the reflective bits seem different):

I actually also wear mine in winter fairly often to keep me warm (it keeps the nip out). Then again, I don't cycle particularly fast so don't generate as much heat as others!

Both his and mine are over a year old now and have survived intact - the material is pretty thick.

We have washed them with NikWax techwash and also reproofed them - probably at least once - with NikWax's wash in reproofing stuff.
The only problem is they do take a bloomin' age to dry when you do wash them as the water just sits in any creases unnoticed...

I have just been reminded about my one bugbear: both his and mine seem a little short in the leg. Ideally you want them quite long so any water goes over rather than in your shoes. I'm not tall, and mine end just above shoe level. In winter I normally wear leather boots so this isn't a problem, but it could annoy if you're in normal shoes.

Should have mentioned, this is for my commute. Therefore, need to look presentable upon arrival at work, not looking like the proverbial drowned rat!

I have these myself, they are great and very well made:

does any body know of any with a longer inside leg? 33-34"

I used to have a pair or waterproof pants which were fine for walking around in, but one in the saddle, the legs were too short (problem solved with gators).

Endura Venturi are probably the most breathable normal waterproofs. The previous version was eVent (better than goretex), and eVent fabric became available off-brand at about the same time as Venturi changed to Venturi II.

Paramo works very well, but
a) it's warm
b) it's bulky if you aren't wearing it
c) it needs care (soap/non-detergent washing, occasional reproofing)

Been wearing Altura Nightvision for some time now. Wife complains that they are making the bed sheets dirty at night.....

But seriously, do the job well. Keep me warm, can get them over my cycle shoes in an emergency, and I don't get too sweaty underneath them.

I bought some basic Peter Storm ones for about £20 2 or 3 years ago from Millets.

Keep me dry, go on over any other trousers. Too rough to wear over shorts, otherwise excellent.
