Kurust should deal with the rust left in the pitting. From memory, you put it on, leave it for a while and then rinse off with water before leaving it to dry. Are you letting it dry with the Kurust on?

I could be wrong there - it's a while since I used any. And these days, whether I read the instructions on the bottle depends on whether I remember to bring my reading glasses out of the house

I know I keep plugging it but I have found Hamerite rust removing gel or liquid. Brush it on or let it soak in a bath of the liquid agitate the rusty area ,leave it to work for a day and then wash off. If it doesn't remove all the rust just repeat. I have had rusty chrome wheels which I was going to bin , painted the gel on and a lot of the bad rust dissolved leaving shiny chrome underneath.

Kurust is based on tannic acid, which converts the rust to stable ferric tannate. As mentioned above, phosphoric acid and citric acid also work in a similar way. I've even seen people use electrolysis. You research all sorts of things if you're into British vehicles built before the late 90s.

Thank you for posting the 'before' 'during' and 'after' photos. Good job.
will get it put back together this evening and test it out tomorrow.
And there the thread stops, 3 weeks ago. We'll never know . . eg whether the paint in the bottom headset cup affected the smoothness of the steering.
I removed it before reassembling :okay:

we were also able to establish that the note of forks is either "G" or "G Sharp" (could I be the only person on CC to know the note of their forks ?)

and it looks like the paints water resistance will be getting another thorough testing this morning - its one seriously miserable morning out there and I have a 30 miler to do :rain:
You could make a collection of them and use them as wind chimes.
