Me neither. But some people just look for the worst possible interpretation of things.

It was not a "worst interpretation", it was merely to point out that not everyone in a sportive is 'racing' and that you cannot know who is of the same ability or has similar goals for any particular ride...if you want to race then enter a race and stand up and be counted against others who have the same intent - otherwise it is no more than an ego trip if your goal is to 'beat' someone not in the slightest bit interested in where the finish in relation to you.

I was on holiday with a good mate who caught 2 flies in flight, as we supped a beer in a Spanish bar. He said, that's 2 nil to me, to which I replied, I don't care I'm not playing.

He said, who gives a toss, it's still 2 nil to me.

A 'hollow victory' I think it's called, be it flies or sportives.

Some folk are naturally competitive and will look to beat others regardless of it not being a competition. I would imagine there is no shortage of such people taking part in sportives. So, in short, despite what it may say on the tin, the contents may contain nuts!

...not saying that people that 'race' sportives are nuts, no no no, of course not ;) That's just what the metaphor/analogy* unfortunately implies!

Edit: not sure if that's a metaphor or an analogy! Analogy would be my guess! ;)
