Was just having a browse round my LBS and could not help overhearing a conversation between shop man/operative and customer. At a recent racing event of 100 miles (roads) the winning time was 4 hours 22 minutes. That seems awfully quick; av speed around 22-24 mph. Or should I not be impressed?

Assume they were talking about a time trial, sub four hours is usually considered 'fast' and you'd usually need to be looking at around 3.45 to win anything with a decent field. Of course a lot depends on the course and conditions.

4:22 sounds awfully slow for a 100 mile TT winning time actually. I think there was only one over 4 hours this year which was a hilly event in Wales.

One of the local hereos round here is Glen Longland, he was the first Brit to break 300 miles for a 12 hour i.e sub 4 hour 100 mile x 3. He's still ripping legs off.

Under four hours for a road race is not uncommon, depending on the standard of the field.

True but there aren't too many races of that length in the UK - the field will always be good quality as only Nat A (max 180k) and Prem Calendar will be over 100 miles. Unless they were talking about a pro race but then not many of them are as short as 100 miles.

Sounds more likely to be a sportive as (as has been pointed out) 4h 22 sounds a bit slwo for a 100 (caveat - I'd never do a 100 in sub 4 hours but then you wouldn't catch me testing further than 10 miles)

That sounds more like the fastest time for one of the more competitive sportives.

Or the midway time check for me

In which case it certainly was not a race, and there should have been no 'winning' time

EDIT: and thus should be moved to RRAS

The way I look at it, in a sportive you get to chose who you are competing with and at what level, or you can chose not to compete at all, and just do your own thing. It's up to you.

Not really...if some knobber decides he is going to compete against you and you are just out for a ride then what "victory" is there if he "beats" you...if riders wanna race then enter a race, so everyone knows it's a competition, not some kind of wankfest for wannabes - you then race against others at the same level, rather than picking and choosing who you think you are competing against for some kind of ego trip.

I am using the "collective you" rather than the "FM you" in this reply...

Not quite sure how you can reference the above to FM's post TBH.

Me neither. But some people just look for the worst possible interpretation of things.
