I've snapped two chains in the last three years - one went at the joining link, another went when a sideplate split. I'm only ten stone or slightly over and change my chains regularly. Both breaks happened when pushing off on a bit of an incline - so a bit of extra effort going in. The second break was almost certainly due to corrosion caused by salty roads, which I'd not noticed during the weekly service.
I'd certainly agree with changing brand, but also working on technique when changing gear under load to minimise extra stress on the chain.
