So for some reason on my fixies the Crankset is now rubbing against my Bottom bracket and the chain ring bolts on the crank hit the frame.

If i now tighten the crank bolt all the way the crank won't move as it's tight against the bottom bracket. I've had this BB for a few months now and it's only now causing me problems.

I bought a Velo Orange threadless bottom bracket and it seems i should of bought a 112mm axle opposed to the 107mm i bought (as i knew that would give me the chain line i'm after). The threaded bottom brackets that i have used on this bike, the 107mm axle length was a good fit and hence why i went for that. As you can see from the photo of the velo orange BB the caps stick out a lot more and is probably the cause of my problem

After trying a few things, I've decided to do something a little unconventional. I have wrapped a little gaffa tape around the BB axle. This means the crankset isn't flush against the BB and has seems to work. I haven't yet ridden it, will be doing that tomorrow to work.

The reason why i don't want to just by a new BB with a longer axle is this one cost £44. i would say it's the best threadless BB on the market though.

So, finally my question. Do you think using gaffa tape is a bit crazy?

crazy but if it works then why not!
i have run a quad bike at one point with aluminium foil wrapped round the gear shaft as the splines were worn away and it needed shimming and that worked fine for ages

I dunno, you're trying to get 5mm difference out of some turns of gaffer tape--how long is that tape going to last with all the power you're putting in turning the cranks around? I'd expect the tape to slip or tear quite quickly TBH.

well i got to work ok, 6 miles up hill with a head and seems to be holding. I thought when i was adding the gaffa tape this isn't a permanent solution. The aluminum can sounds like a good idea and they are lots of them lying around the city of Edinburgh, so that should save me a trip to tescos.

Thanks for your advice.

I found that the best and possibly only use for Tesco Value Bitter was to dispose of the contents and use the can for shims ....

I think this calls for a combined effort from all CC forumer's, to do a thorough R&D study on as many different types of beer cans and advise on which would be best for this purpose

i picked up a can of monster energy drink on my commute home yesterday. Thought that was fitting for my fixie.
I can just feel the crank coming loose, it will probably do for the rest of the week, but i might try swapping to the can solution tonight, rather than wait to the weekend.
