Mymother, who is a wise old bird says that tonic water is good to prevent and soothe cramp, she says it's the quinine that does it.....
And who am I to argue?
I find adding Gin makes it more palatable....

I find it tends to happen to me if I hadn't been doing many miles for a while and then suddenly increase the mileage. Severe cramps on a fixed gear at 25mph are not funny.

Since coming back to fixed four and a half years ago I have found that my right calf can cramp up under certain conditions, a combination of a temperature around freezing or below and high cadence can set it off, as you said its not funny, not at 30mph plus on a descent on a 65 inch gear and definitely not when sat in the middle of the pack as happened last winter. After a few minutes at the road side and some stretches it normally settles down enough to continue.
