AIUI the rides @dellzeqq organised (both the fundraising ones and the regular FNRTTC rides) had insurance cover and no mandatory helmet rule.
true - but that took a good deal of armtwisting on our behalf by the broker - an intelligent man who listened and made a difficult case to the insurers. As he (and @srw) put it - dead people are cheap. Brain damaged people are really expensive. I think that a new event, with no insurance history, would struggle.

I knew that if we made helmets compulsory sufficient of the volunteers would have walked away to make the thing unworkable (to my recollection we had 47 marshals on the last charity ride). The Directors and Officers bit is the key, though. Without the D+O insurance I would not have done it. Over nine years I took on the occasional personal liability when the excellent CTC organisers insurance didn't cover me, but 325 charity riders, of all shapes, sizes and abilities would have been way beyond me.
