To Kill a Mockingbird was completely ruined for me by being one of my O level books, having disected it line by line it could no longer work as a whole and became a complete bore.

Yes Sharky I took you up on that recommendation when you made it a while back. Also concur on that, brilliant film. Shows that all you need really is a good director, a good script and good acting.

Velvet, I thought N by NW was good but not as good as Vertigo, Rear Window and of course Psycho. Hitchcock certainly knew how to shoot a gripping film. Even though they are celebrated as classics, I STILL feel like they're underrated!

A few others I enjoyed, in fact I'd call them "must see" films:

"M"
The Seventh Seal
Sunset Boulevard

Sadly on Lovefilm, "M" had 113 reviews compared to Will Smith's "I am Legend"'s 50,000.

Any hidden gems that anyone thinks is a must-see?

One to see: 12 Angry Men (Jury drama, slow paced but well thought out look at human interactions)
What a great film. I've watched it a few times.

I thought M was good film. It was very interesting anyway, and strangely topical when I saw it a few years ago. Some of the acting still belongs to the silent era, but some of it is very good. Strange that it was filmed in 1930s Germany.

absolutely, I couldn't believe the subject of the film given that it was shot in 1931, not to mention the questions it posed at the end.
Slingblade. Stunning. Billy Bob Thornton directed, wrote and starred. Deserved deification, never mind an Oscar.
I've added this to my LoveFilm list... I'll let you know.
