Okay!

So done a little investigating this evening. Chain itself shows complete uniformity after far too long of looking - I'll try and grab a chain wear tool this weekend to see if that's an issue. I can replicate the issue spinning the pedals backwards. The chain appears to "jump" up, though not as frequently as when under load. I even took a slow mo video that I'll try and upload.

The hanger could be an issue, I know when I had my off into a canal (yeah, we can laugh at that now) that the bike fell with fully loaded panniers onto the side of the mech and I had to clear some mud off it so a knock like that I imagine may have some long term repercussions, though I imagine I might have noticed sooner as that was a few months ago now.

Here's the slow mo of it slipping, looking at it its almost definitely chain wear, isn't it?

Looks like it's catching on a specific tooth [though I'm sure that it's more "normal" for a chain to do that when going backwards due to the profile of the teeth and potentially the chain direction]. As it looks like the same place every rotation so I'd look carefully at the specific gear for a bent/damaged tooth. Inevitably you've got less tolerance on 10 speed drivetrains due to the thin chain and densely packed cassette so it will not take much to affect it. Could still be indexing so a subtle 1/8 of a turn of the adjuster each go may resolve it.

Good luck!

Some of the links on that chain are bad. There might be a twisted tooth on the sprocket as well but as its not happening on every revolution or on all links I would swap the chain out first.

Thanks, It's a good excuse for me to re-fit my first chain this weekend as well.

Any ideas as to what could have caused this in such a relative short distance?

You think a knock could have damaged the chain? Interesting!

Thanks for all the input thus far, still getting a feel for the maintenance side of things

Put the new chain on, if it cures it great, if not at least you've narrowed it down.
If it still happens then put the old chain back on and save the new one.

Have a play with the indexing, might just be that but again will be quite easy to rule out.

Did you try swapping the chain over yet?

I didn't, unfortunately! I had a wee project on the ladies bike that took priority (apparently) in changing her old bike from friction shifters to indexed ones... Managed to work that!

Didn't want to carry forward my, perhaps undeserved, confidence into wrecking mine!

well, I ordered a new chain (courtesy of the "found a bargain" thread, ultergra)

Used paypal and it got sent to an old address! Fortunately my last registered address is my parents so my lovely mother has forwarded it on, this was destined to go wrong from the start.

Stay tuned, folks!
