This goes for many retail shops in general, I make my own computers and know how to fix them easily/cheap. If you take yourself to a dedicated shop for the service you have to expect to pay a premium.

yep, basically any hobby trade, bikes, cameras, musical instruments, pc's...

but enough of my social commentary

... back to the OP comments, what kind of haribo did you use to try and mend the old tyre? I reckon star mix eggs would give more chance than a gummi bear

Fixed a toilet myself recently. Homebase wanted £14 for the siphon which I was able to buy from a plumbers' merchant for less than a fiver. If I'd got a plumber in to do it I reckon it would've set me back the best part of £100.

Oh and I hardly ever buy from Wiggle now. They are just not cheap anymore. I bought a pair of bibshorts from LBS recently which were reduced from £50 to £40. The same shorts are on Wiggle at £60 so they can sell them for £54 including the 10% discount.

By the way, I purchased a cotton cap from Wiggle that was delivered within the past few days (returned back to London last night to find it on the living room table - along with various other online cycling buys). For the first time ever - I received Haribo
Slightly dissapointed, as I was expecting a proper bag of Starmix but the 10p mini bag consisting of about 6 sweets was still a nice touch

I order some stuff on line its often faster, cheaper, greater choice and more convenient (I can order in the evening, night when a shop is shut) than a lbs if items are in stock. Other times its better to go to a lbs for things like clothes and shoes so I can try them on first or if its a bog standard item I need in a hurry (brake/gear cables, blocks etc) or if I want advice or I just don't have the technical ability

I don't think even the service levels from online retailers are that bad. I ordered a set of lights from Wiggle, one of which arrived faulty. Got a rtm note from the website, mailed it back, got the replacement and a refund of postage by return.

In fact I only returned the faulty rear from a set and got a whole new set back, so i have two front lights, one rear, and two sets of mountings for the price of the original set. Expensive Cateye ones too. Dunno if that was just a mistake by them or a genuine gesture, but a result either way.

Not a mistake Nigel - more being caught out trusting a customer. They will have expected you to return the whole set. By the time the faulty rear light gets to them nobody will know why so looks like you will get away with it.

not a personal pop at you Nigel - it's just the way we do things these days. The cost of losses is built in to everything they sell so we've all contributed to your good luck. Have the front bracket on me:smile:

i ordered about £50 worth of stuff from wiggle this week. 4/5 items arrived next day, with 1/5 arriving a day later, with sweets.

i know some people like to knock them, but my experiences have always been positive.
