It's not just the guys serving in the bike shops, it's also the guys who have come on the maintenance courses. The ones who take over the dialogue with the person running the course, possibly in order to have a little boast about their existing mechanical knowledge and grasp of arcane cycling jargon. Women-only maintenance courses around here are always over-subscribed, largely because the women aren't made to feel stupid if they don't understand how something works. There must be men out there who feel the same, I'd have thought.
I've run training courses where female cyclists have done the same. Not as frequently as the men, but I tend to get more male delegates anyway, so pro rata I'd judge the levels of knowitallness about the same between the sexes on my courses. They're just as capable as being of being know-it-all-bores as the blokes. The idea that its a one way thing is fanciful, to put it politely.
