As you can see from the picture, my rear wheel on my old Carrera road bike is offset when in the frame.
This is the second Carrera frame I've had (went from medium to a small) and the problem is apparent on both frames. I can centralise the wheel and tighten the skewer but it soon moves to it's natural position which isn't central. There is some clearance but it doesn't look right to me?

turned it round in the rear dropouts to see if its still off centre ? Have you tried to hold it in the central position whilst locking the skewer tight ? What are the dropouts like do they look damaged at all? Is the hanger well clear of the drop out on the frame? Could well be the wheels is sitting at an angle due to an obstruction ? FYI I had to file my carbon frame dropouts a smidge for this very same reason!

Indeed it is and I've discovered it's the wheel that is the problem. I swapped the rear wheels round with the one from my Giant Defy and that's perfectly central yet the Carrera wheel is offset when in the Giant frame.
I've replaced some spokes that randomly snapped in that wheel ages ago and I'm guessing that in my attempts to true the wheel, I've pulled the rim over to one side. It's only my old winter hack and tbh, the wheels are well past their best anyway so not the end of the world. Might be trawling eBay later then.....

How far does the nut on the drive side stick out past the cassette ?, if it is sticking out more than 2/3mm then you can adjust it in the way which will pull the wheel over .

Thanks for your reply MrGrumpy. I turned the wheel round and it's offset to the other side now so definitely the wheel that's to blame. Dropouts look good and the hanger is clear of the dropouts.

I had the bearings out for a clean and regrease a while back and I've just had a look to see if I put it all back correctly.
It's hard to explain but it's impossible to get it wrong really. The lock nut on the drive side sticks out no more than 3mm. Worth a look though so thank you for your reply.

Well, I've managed to get my rear wheel a little more central than it was. It's not perfect but it's probably past it's best with over 6000 miles on it so worth a try. I couldn't pull it over any more for fear of snapping the spokes on the freewheel side. I loosened the spokes on the opposite side to compensate. It's fairly true and round so I'm pleased with my achievements. Thank you for all your help and suggestions

You can't beat the satisfaction of doing a job yourself and seeing results from it. I had a couple of pints afterwards with the money I'd saved

Having been fixing my own bikes for 48 years+ I am over filled with satisfaction. Playing with tools for a living takes the fun out of it somehow.

I couldn't agree more screenman. I build cars for a living and can't stand doing any work on my car now. Always loved tinkering with bikes as a kid and it's stayed with me. I wouldn't want to spoil that. You cannot buy the satisfaction you get from finding out how things work and fixing problems, it's great.
