Hydrocolloid dressings if you can get them for road rash. Stops the wound drying, and it heals much better with less scaring ! Worked a treat on my shoulder surgery - nicely healed in a couple of weeks = no open wound so can ride bike, and no scars now !

Wish those dressings had been available when I left a 6" square patch of my ass on the Cat and Fiddle a few years back. I was well 'ard - road 15 miles home wearing half a pair of my best 'club' bib shorts and blood covered booty showing ! Took the side off my Look pedals and mashed my bar tape up, and scratched my Sidi Genius shoes - not happy about that bit, oh and my best shorts were ruined. Was in the 'pub' that night offering to show me mates the scars ^_^ - even had to go to the pub in tracky bottoms, as my trousers were too painful to put on.

Feeling for you mate, I myself had a stack yesterday after a very nice trails ride on my new MTB, decided right near the end of the ride with friends, to find a grass covered hole on the track out of the forest, went flying forward somehow caught my headset/handlebars hit left inner thigh and outer right thing, got a sore shoulder sore right knuckle and a bloody sore leg, luckily i fell sideways from the bike rather than over the top, also most of my gear including bike seems to be fine.

as most have said, get your bike sorted yourself sorted, the head on out

if my leg is okay I will be doing just that, heading back out asap to that trail to find the evil hole and fill it in hah!

Sorry to hear about your accident Spokey. Just a jarring experience that has winded your enthusiasm for a bit. From the sounds of your later posts though seems like your getting the itch back again very quickly. My advice would actually to have been to spend a silly amount of money on new stuff for your bike so you would HAVE to get out and use it!!

Touch wood, I have never had an off so far. Had 2 scary moments, both high speed bends that I misjudged, the main one at 40 mph. Ended up locking the rear tyre and doing a bit of speedway on tarmac with oncoming traffic in the other lane. Fortunately I held it but I must admit when I was in bed some strange thoughts were running through my head!

The worse thing about your tale I guess is the sheer unpredictability of your incident. I went too fast, had a bad line, braked badly etc All accountable elements for why I nearly came off. With yours, you were pootling along and then you were off. Not much to learn from that situation apart from, as someone else said, 'shoot happens'. It sounds bad but its what it is. Best try and get back on the bike with that expensive new gear and take it as far as you want to, and see if that bug bites again.

From the sounds of your later posts, it doesn't seem it will take that long!

Hope you mend well Spokey, ride safe.

Sorry to hear about this, and hope you continue cycling. It is a vulnerable position we put ourselves in however. I've had a couple of off's in the last year myself, once due to my lack of experience and probably carelessness and bent my bike and the second time due to someone not paying attention and riding in front of me, sending me over the bars. I just feel grateful I wasn't hurt more then a few grazes and bruises. I try to use cycle paths wherever I can too so if I do come off I'm not as risk of going under a car but it's also inevitable that road riding will form part of my route. Suppose what I am trying to say is that we can lessen the risk by making a few choices but there will always be an element of risk involved and I accept this.

I don't go out as often following my off and losing three front teeth, however, I now enjoy my rides again but have only passed my accident spot once in 13 months.

OUCH, feeling for you there my friend!
