Off to get myself a helmet, partly at the insistance of the misses, but also the voice telling me it's probabley a good idea. I'd never have gone out on a motorbike without one so why should a cycle be different.
Not much discussion value there so I'll chuck in a question

Is there really much difference between a 40quid one and say, an 80quid one?

My understanding is that the single most important thing is to get one that fits your head perfectly. Buy in a bricks and mortar store rather than online as you will be able to try it on.

Yeah I'm gonna nip to halfords and see what they have and then if they come up empty, I know my local bike store has a few that I like (was in there yesterday).
Just I see some that are 30quid and then others at 45quid etc and I don't know if it's a bit like buying brand name goods - I.E often paying for the name rather than the goods - or if there's actually much safety improvement untill you get to silly money

Make sure it fits and you're basically good to go. Put it on and push on the back of the helmet forwards. If it doesn't slope off the front of your head, it's pretty much a comfort thing from then on. Have a look at a Bell Venture. It's a good helmet, 25 quid, and looks decent.

The more expensive will slow time and allow you to land on your feet if you fall off. They also allow you to ride faster by bending the co axial coil of time reception at the handlebars.

They may be slightly better at cooling and fitting, too.

My one has a series of lugs that fit into the clip under the chin, rather than a single clip. Fits really well.
This means that in winter I can put a beanie on underneath and easily not do it up as tight.

It also has a rear light built in which is nice. It was £40 I think. I'll have a look at the make for you if you want.

Think I looked at that online, seemed alright. I can see this "Just going to buy a helmet" thing ending up in buying a load of other stuff I don't actually need. Although I DO think I would benefit from panniers lol

This time of year you will want one with lots of ventilation to reduce sweaty head problems.

My understanding is as the price goes up the amount of material used decreases, but still fitting in standard 'safety' criteria, so you get a lighter and better ventilated helmet the more you pay.

The price goes up as the mould becomes more fancy; it costs a lot to make all those vents and nice curves. It has nothing to do with the amount of polystyrene foam used. The second factor is the strap and framework, some of which is manufactured by injection moulding, also expensive.

I always wear one having had a blow to the head, which smashed the helmet and made me see stars. Without the helmet I reckoned I'd have been quite badly injured. To me, an inch of impact-absorbing styrofoam between my skull and a rock or a car can only increase my chances of survival in an accident. It would be so silly to end up in a wheelchair or worse for want of £40 spent on a helmet.

I bought a cheap Decathlon helmet not the £30-35 white and yellow model they have but the one below that.

After about 30+ mile rides especially in the warmer weather I knew I had a helmet on as it would irritate me ever so slightly. Not anything to really bother me but enough that when I took the helmet off I noticed the difference.

I now have a giro monza again not high end but not cheap either and after a 30+mile I don't really notice anything which to me speaks volumes.

I think it best to make your choice on what fits you best, is comfiest and provides a decent amount of ventilation

Think of a lower spec HJC vs an Arai replica and you will get the idea and if you bought arai then the highest speccd cycle lid is going to seem cheap in comparison.

I had the white a yellow decathlon helmet and it was nice but I didn’t like the placement of the pads. The helmet I have at the moment is the Giro Prolight. The difference in the weight is what you notice the most and then the ventilation.

The problem I had with the pads on the Decathlon one was that one of them was straight across your forehead and on hot day would fill up like a sponge then one move of your head would squash it and run a river of sweat into your eyes. Needless to say this wasn’t very nice.

Also whatever you buy and whatever you spend don't expect it to afford a fraction of the protection of a Motorcycle helmet.
