Blackpool Tower was originally constructed as an oversized electricity pylon, to enable a National Grid interconnect between the Lancashire Coast and Northern Ireland. To prevent the cable sagging into the water, the centre section was to loop over the Laxey Wheel on the Isle of Man before continuing on to a proposed shamrock-shaped tower on the Irish coastline.
