A Shibboleth is the hebrew word for an ear of corn.

Different tribes pronounce the word in different ways. The book of Judges tells of a battle between the Gileadites (victors) and Ephraimites (defeated). After the battle, the surviving Ephraimites mingled with the Gileadites, in order to escape. Both groups had to cross the river Jordan, at which point the Gileadites showed each soldier an ear of corn, saying “what is that?” All replied “A Shibboleth” - but the Ephraimites pronounced it “Sibboleth”, and 42,000 Ephraimites were therefore identified and killed.

The Scots invited the word “Loch” for a similar purpose. It’s prime purpose is to identify English tourists - but it does not distinguish Scots from Germans.

Encyclopedia Britannica, which is the Wikipedia of the past, originated in Scotland.

It was the idea of an Edinburgh bookseller, Colin Macfarquhar.

To love the national dish of Scotland, you have to love the sheep very deeply.

The notorious Haggis, which is a nightmare for vegans, is made with the heart, liver, and lungs of a sheep and then boiled in the animal’s stomach.
