Which explains why, when watching an early game of Ye Olde Tennis, the sheep was heard to say to the cow:

'My dad's in that racquet'

The fear of premature burial, the "deceased" being in a coma for instance, not actually dead, led to many devices being patented to allow the "deceased" to alert those above ground to their plight.

One of the most simple of these was a cord attached to the persons finger. The cord leading to a bell on the surface, which would ring when the cord was pulled. The "deceased" became the dead ringer whilst the person watching for any activity would be working the graveyard shift. Their job was to get the "deceased" coffin dodger, for whom the bell tolled, to the surface, having been saved by the bell, and to a physician.

In a drugs bust/early alarm call in Scotland last year, the cannabis plants seen growing and reported as such, were actually tomato plants.

It's believed the person reporting it was a workman who'd been doing work on behalf of the landlord. It's not known if there was any alternate reason for reporting it, or if whoever reported had any previous gardening experience.

Some years ago the Met did a drugs bust (sorry, executed an MDA warrant)on a house, solely because of the high infra red signature from the roof. Excess heat emissions are often indicative of a cannabis grow, as the heat lamps etc give off a lot of, er, heat.

Anyway, there was no cannabis to be found, but they discovered 2 things. The house belonged to a PCSO, and he had no loft insulation. And that, children, is why you're supposed to get some corroboration from other sources before going to a magistrate.

I have just read the latest edition of Vegetable and Fruit Eaters Weekly (I have an annual subscription).
Anyway....it was explaining that bananas were originally straight. As they were very expensive only the very rich could afford them.
These rich people had special 'banana pockets' at the rear of their trousers but as they were straight the bananas were uncomfortable to carry.
So.... a law was passed that they had to be grown 'bent' so (i quote) "these banans would suffice to snugly fit the average buttock".
Eventually the straight ones died out leaving us the shaped ones we have today.
Cucumbers were also straight but thats a whole other story.
