Before a long ride I usually have pasta/rice the night before and a fry-up in the morning. On the ride I'll have orange squash in my bottles and eat flapjack when I get peckish.

Amazing how alternating the tastes stopes you getting fed up with one or t'other

Jelly Babies for a glucose hit
and for salt replenishment (and a bit of fat & protein to balance out all those carbs).... they are about jelly baby size.

Although my 'long' rides are only around the 50 mile mark, I take a oatbar type thing, maybe a banana and a pack of jelly babies. Usually add a bit of salt and sugar to my squash too.

Large helping of beans on toast with scrambled egg either the night before or in the morning is usually a good basis for me (unless there's a fry up in the offering!)

Plain old water for me. On a very hot day, i will take one bottle with 50% orange juice and 50% water to which I add half a teaspoon of salt to ward off cramp. No special meals either - although if it's a Saturday ride, carb loading might involve a Curry House :-) Food on the day will often involve whatever cake is being sold at the cafe/shop we stop at (and bacon rolls). I do carry an energy bar on my saddle bag for emergencies though.

I've found the key to be not so much what you eat or drink, but when. Eat before you're hungry and drink before you're thirsty.

I'm doing my first sportive on Saturday  its only 56m and I've done lots of 50s so far. Will take powerbar fruit gels, home made flapjack in chunks and an electrolyte carby drink. Trying to ensure that I don't have to stop too much.
