As others have said it does get easier the more you ride. I started commuting to work 3 months ago after being off a bike for 20+ years, and it was shear torture at first. Now hills I walked up in the beginning don't even make me sweat or start to "huff and puff". I'm going to hit the 1000 km mark next week since I started and feel better than I have in years. The passion for cycling is back, and my motorcycle sits lonely in the driveway! Next on the agenda is a new cyclocross but man it's hard to choose!
I biked a few days a week to begin, then 3, now up to 5 days a week. I think the trick is to take it easy in the beginning, pace yourself and don't push too hard..have fun! Allow time for the body to recover. Very quickly you'll notice the improvement and how much easier it will get and how much faster your body will recover. In the beginning the trip to work took me 40 minutes, now I can bike it comfortably in 25.
Stick with it, take it easy and have fun. Push too hard too early and it becomes work, then the desire to quit is there. You'll have 'off' days, but take them for what they are because the 'on" days are a blast!
Good luck and stick with it, it's worth it!
