Not thinking like a cyclist

Have been cycling for just 8 months but this morning realised that I was still not thinking like a cyclist. Going out to meet up with others for Wednrsday morning ride, I came across a POLICE ROAD CLOSED sign, and I turned round to go back! Was half way down the side road when I realised I could have carried on and merely walked round the obstruction. Turned out it was a car and van either trying to mate or occupy the same bit of road at the same time.

On my regular 30 mile evening ride there's a line of 440kv pylons (walpole to norwich) which were being re-cabled
a few months ago.
Several times i had to walk round the barriers that were across the road, in full view of the guy in the security hut (and
the temporary cameras that were there).
Both edges of the barrier fence ended just where the dykes started, and both sides were pretty steep, but me and the
cheapo coyote road bike got round fine.
