Will any SPD cleat fit any SPD pedal? No
For example, would SH56 cleats fit shimano A520 pedals?

If buying the pedals new they are normaly supplied with cleats if not check on google if they will fit

Cool. Thing is, HOPEFULLY if the motorbike sells on Sunday, I'll be popping off to LBS heaven and ordering a Felt Z6. I have some M324 dual wotsit SPD's on my hybrid, but it would be sacralidge to put said model on the new bike. The A520's look nice enough to go on but I want both pedals to take the same cleat for obvious reasons.

I have Shimano M520 pedals on my road bike. They are cheap and they work well with a trainer-type MTB shoe that you can walk around in without any difficulty at all.

Great choice of pedal.... but Ribble are doing the A600 (lighter, Ultegra standard version) for only £43 quid. http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/ro...Clipless-Spd-A600-Pedals/SHIMPEDA735000000000

For what it's worth, I have four different sets of Shimano SPD pedals and the same cleat fits them all so I don't have to change shoes between rides. M505 on Cubester's Ragley, M545 on my Cube LTD, PD A520s on the Boardman and PD A600 on the Cube Peloton.

yes a good choice of SPD I changed to trail SPD's (similar) this year much more easier to engage gives your sole a little more platform ideal for commuting

Sounds like I might like them on both bikes!
