If possible you want two lights each front and back.
That way if one stops working, you still have a backup light.
Plus in traffic running one in solid mode and the other one in flashing mode is safer.
A "back up" rear light is a good plan. It doesn't have to be anything expensive, a cheapo LED job will do. Just something to cover your a--se if something "happens" to your main light.

The great thing about living in these latitudes is the long dusk/dawn. I rode two hours, and most of that could be classified as dusk. It was pretty awesome.

Saw a fellow today bouncing along on an old Schwinn Varsity with a dynamo headlight and tailight, looked like the old Schwinn Approved set from the ancient of days. Looked like fun, for 30++ pounds of bicycle.

Just invest in a good set of lights, make sure you've got very good hi vis clothing and youll be fine. The most important thing is being seen rather than being able to see
