Well my Tuesday ride went to poo. The other 2 riders cancelled on me and my parents were over. So I have decided to try out a night ride tonight.

I am pretty use to riding the early hours for my commute but its a pretty short ride and tonight I aim to visit the countryside in the dark (my girlfriend thinks I am mental). Setting off at 12-1ish . Not fussed about the mileage to be fair may even just go round a few streets etc I have never been down. May even stop for a photo.

Do many others of you prefer a night time ride ?. Also If I am not about on here for a few days I am probably dead lol.

I prefer to ride during the day..

Is calmer at night on the country side but still dangerous.. If I do go riding at night I prefer group rides.. easier for drivers to see 3 or more then 1.

Be safe buddy..!

I love night rides but If on my own I stick to slightly better lit roads. I met my mate at 7 last night and it wasn't long before my front light was turned on.

Very little traffic and a lovely half moon in the sky, did get absolutely drenched though

I did London to Brighton Overnight last year. Brilliant event. Great people. It's just that I saw bugger all. The only points at which I had any idea where I was were at the beginning, at the end, and when we crossed the M25. Even though we crossed Tower Bridge at the start, I still managed not to notice the Tower of London.

Discovered I'd way underestimated how many lights/batteries I'd need, and spent at least a coupe of hours without a front light and sprinting to keep with others whose lights were working. Never trust a re-chargeable light to last as long as they advertise. Having said all that, it won't put me off doing it all again some time.

Ive been doing alot of night time riding lately. Mix of streets, Parks, woodlands and even been over to cannock chase.
Its much quiter and calmer than riding during the day. Gets cold but its nice.

Setting off at 12-1...as in, 1 am??!! There's this thing....called sleep...!
Seriously, stay safe. I wouldn't ride at night around the villages where I live. Drivers are nutters, especially the spivvy little g*ts who do handbrake turns round the roundabout....

I have no worries about my rear lights they last for weeks, using my big front lights that say will last 5 hours I will have me a spare in my bag. Will defo try the streets as for the parks and woodlands I may give that a miss . Traffic wise I dont usually have any trouble at 3:30am to work so not too fussed on that front.

Are you doing the next one donger?

I loved that night ride, that's what has got me down the lanes at night nowadays.
Although I went to the other extreme, took two spare batteries, one spare light, a head torch and a nato cyalume stick for me and my wingman so we could tell each other apart from the crowds. What a tit.

I think I'll trike the next one but stay in Brighton and cycle up during the day before hand.

You think you looked a tit? I had a reflective jacket and a chequered reflective helmet band on. Somewhere near Brixton we came across a bit of an unruly crowd near midnight. Several of them shouted "Rozzer!" as I approached. No plans to do next year's, Pikey, but who knows?

I love riding at night. I ride to work between 6 and 7 in the evening, and home again between 7 and 8 am, so it's still light both ways. But recently my hours have changed so that I get off at 2 am on a Saturday morning. I have two routes to work: one straight up the A40, which has a good surface and fewer hills, and one along country single-lane roads, which is quiet but hilly, and slightly longer. In daylight, I use the rural route all the time, because the traffic on the A40 is mental, but in the middle of the night I usually do the A40 way home as it seems a lot quicker. But I have done the rural route a few times and enjoyed it. You can't see much, but the feeling of quiet and solitude is fantastic. And some odd things can happen. Once I surprised a few cows in a field and they stampeded. The noise of all these cows running when you couldn't actually see them was quite unnerving. But it's good fun, and now I look forward to it every week. Lots of reflective gear, good lights front and back, and a spare of each. I also carry a head torch in my bag in case of mechanical problems after dark, and I suppose that could double as an emergency front light. In a few weeks, I will be doing both ways in the dark.

I love city riding in the dark: just as well, because it's practically always dark in Scotland
In the early hours (I work shifts) I dare ride the dreaded double carriageway, take the road all the way, foxes, rabbits, silence under the stars, strangely it never rains on me.
I regularly go through the unlit parks too, got very good lights though.

@Pat "5mph" .

Think you’ll get too wet?

8. The UK’s cycle commuters actually have a 97% chance of staying dry!. This is according to goskyride

No idea how that is worked out.
