I have no idea why but it is just one of two places where people who fancy a bit of speed have traditionally been let off the leash. The other is between a little bit after Betchworth and The Cabin.
Never done that one. There used to be a partial sprint on the front at Southend

I think it's because there's no need for waymarking after that point: from the top of the hill down to Graveney Marsh and on to the Waterfront it's a question of following the road, so you can let rip knowing you're safe from being allocated a junction to stand at. However - beware doing the same on the Bognor ride! The clever money tends to be about 10 from the front, to avoid waymarking on the last set of junctions and thus be first for breakfast.

I've been caught out at Bognor with that last corner

Unfortunately given the hell that Whitstable town centre can be on a Saturday morning it would be difficult to place a 'go straight' way marker

There's an enormous difference in the miles between Faversham and Whitstable having been savoured.
Or raced.
Each has their reward.
Think on.

Very true. When I was a teenager I spend very many happy days fishing on the marshes of Graveney, and longlining off Seasalter. Gettig up early then afterwards going to school in Faversham. Happy days. Graveney is nice.

There's another game you can play - mark the turn, or just linger at the back, then see how many people you can overtake before you get to the cafe. It's fun. I know this ;-)
I did that last year. I think around 15 went past before Tim (who was the ride leader) turned up to relieve me from way marking, as they'd all been racing ahead of him on the drag out of Faversham. I caught the last one about 2 miles before the finish line, I mean the Waterfront.

I seem to remember that on the Wetstable ride I was first to the cafe for some reason. Commander Legg gathered the survivors together just where you enter Whitstable and I was sent to lead the first party to the cafe on the basis that I knew where it was. Come to think of it, I think everyone else knew where it was. So that doesn't make sense.

Perhaps I dreamt it.

As some of us were incapable of even speech at that time. Finding a dry, warm eat & drink palace we all knew well was still a big ask.
The seriousness of the occasion was marked by how little beer was drunk. I know, impossible for some to imagine.
