Although I admit, that's more the excepion. Deep Purple's recent output has been a dirge and Uriah Heep should have given it up when David Byron passed way.

Jethro Tull/Ian Anderson, of whom I am a fan, should have gone out on a moderate high more than a decade back with Homo Erraticus, and whats left of Status Quo is clearly only in it for the money now.

Even Rod Stewart, who has largely retained his voice, has recognised that things have moved on and now settles for making albums covering old standards for his late middle aged female fanbase. He knows it would be embarassing to try an keep going as before.

Only the Stones sort of get away with it, somehow.

"Sort of" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there!

From what I can tell the Stones were running on fumes by the time I started listening to Maiden some 30 odd years ago. I really hope that Steve has more sense than to let that happen to Maiden.

Apparently he isn’t leaving the band, but retiring from live shows.
So that leaves the door open for future studio recordings.

As for the whole band stopping. They clearly still love it and can easily fill enormous stadiums, so I suspect they will keep on rocking.

Dave Murray has been wanting to quit for a couple of years now. So will be interesting to see how long they do actually carry on for. I think they have at least one more album in them as their last, Senjutsu, was their best in years.

I actually like the new Deep Purple stuff, yes its a bit different to the stuff they did in the 70s but its pretty fresh sounding. I saw them live earlier in the year, I was fearing the worst from a bunch of close to 80 year olds, but they were excellent, musically and vocally. The press reviews were also very positive. I actually think they are better live now than the 80's reform, which whilst much anticipated wasn't great from live show point of view.

Iron Maiden have nothing left to prove, and must have made more money that they can hope to spend, but something, presumably Bruce, is still driving them on.

Dickinson was asked a few years ago why he still flies commercial planes when he clearly doesn’t need the money.

His response was that he also still sings in a band, but doesn’t need the money either.

They do it for the love. ( but I suspect the cash comes in handy too)

Claim to fame: About 30 years ago I used to know a bloke who claimed to have sort-of played bass with Iron Maiden. He didn't actually play with Iron Maiden, at least not regularly, but he was in another band that had several members of Maiden in it at various times and was part of that scene when they started. A kind of feeder band. I don't remember the name of the band.
