I'm already using wireless/cableless
mind you it is a dura ace 1speed

yep, thought that would be quite easy to do in this day and age where you could change a riders gear going up hill to the biggest gear. I saw an episode of Homeland where they stopped a guys pacemaker using the internet so if that is possible it must be easy to change someones gears.....
Someone else who watches homeland!!! :hugs: Love that show.

Weight of the set has been quoted at about 2.5kg. I wonder if that's the entire transmission plus the shifters (+ batteries etc)?
In the future I wonder if we will have electronic shifters that are programmeable for any number of gears. After all it is only a matter of the shifters telling the mechs how far to shift. I think the only thing that would stop you from instantly swopping from 5 speeds to 12 at the back would be the width of the chain. Hmmm it might be a bit like mods for games like the Elder Scrolls, Half-Life etc.

Having said that my cable shifters work fine, especially in 8-speed that I use all the time for CX and touring. I won't go electronic for a while, if ever. Certainly not paying £2k for it yet!

I think it's solution looking for a problem. Interesting in a technical fashion, but ultimately a waste of time. I'm sure with more time he will make it smaller and lighter / cheaper, but as others have said, internally routed cables are already well hidden and unobtrusive, so why would you need to do away with them? As for hacking/blocking the signals, it can be done. With an encrypted BT it would be very difficult to break in, but it's very possible to flood the channel with noise in such a way that signals to the unit will get lost, especially in high EM environments.

As for 12 speed, won't that make the spindle longer, thus moving the spokes anchor to the hub inwards towards the wheel centre line? If they do that it removes some of the lateral rigidity of the structure, meaning more spokes or a wheel that flexes more.

All universally sized. Changes are in the chain gap no?

True, but there has to come a point where that is no longer possible? It's like the Gillet razor thing, just how many blades DO you need?

If you make the chain thinner / cog teeth thinner, it will eventually lead to weaker components, unless we are talking about using a stronger material to offset.

Marketing speel? We're always being told that the latest Gillette is the closest shave ever. Personally in all the years I've required a razor, I've yet to see much difference.

More blades= increased price but amazingly they don't last any longer or appear to do a better job.

Apply that to chainsets/groupsets however you like :P

Too true, and the more blades they add the easier the damn thing clogs up....I think we maybe getting just slightly off topic

Isn't anything over 9 or even 8 gears really not that useful to 99% of riders. I think this arms race for ever more gears poses the problem that soon loads of gears will become the standard and companies will stop making the lesser geared cassettes and such

I remember people who would not change from a black and white TV, as for computers well many thought they would never want one. Cycling shoes, come on sandles in summer wellingtons in winter.

6 speed who wants that many used to say, index gears well they are no way as good, the list goes on.

Embrace technology.

I'm happy to embrace, honest I am - but I'm not up for embracing what is not really needed and is merely produced to fill a hitherto undreamed of niche spotted by suits in a marketing planning meeting to extract more pounds/dollars/yen from the consumers bank account.

Mind you I'm a Luddite - I can still use a slide rule!
